Stories
“I ran into a lot of people as we passed out the flyers yesterday. I was amazed at how many had come to last years family day. I ran into some who got really excited about it, I ran into some who had heard of the church and wanted to hear more. And some who were really struggling and needed something like this. One woman, Brenda, was taking out her recycle bin and I stopped to talk to her and told her about all we were doing and she asked what kind of church we were. After telling her about us, I was so pumped and excited I forgot to help her with the recycling…(she was pushing it with her foot) d’oh!
It brought great joy to my heart to see God working in our community. I am glad to be serving at such a gospel loving church.” Cliff Hilton, volunteer, Family Day Flyer Distribution Project, 4/3/08
“Our seed project was an incredible experience! I can always pray for the “homeless,” but [because of our seed project] how much more is it to petition God specifically about Ringo’s knee pain or Adolf’s emotionally distant family in Indiana?” Kelsey Barnes, Sojourn Member, seed volunteer
“When I went Bates Community Development Center (BCDC) to serve lunch to the hungry and/or homeless, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was bringing my kids along, too. Would they be able to help? Or at least not keep me from helping?Would they be safe? Welcomed? Would the ministry be worth the effort?
Our neighbors at Bates Memorial Baptist welcomed us with open arms. They showed us around, let us know how we could help, introduced us to various new friends, and loved our kids. Many of the homeless merely came and picked up lunches before heading back outside. But even though they didn’t stick around with us for long, they enjoyed saying hi to my kids and got teasing smiles out of them.
We helped serve food (and also distribute clothes) to around 40 people in aspan of two hours - some days it’s more, some days fewer. And we were also especially blessed to join in service and friendship with our Christian brothers and sisters. We shared stories, laughs, and work. I came away encouraged by how much good can be done when Christ’s people come together to fulfill His mission. I encourage anyone to join in!” Matt Harner, seed volunteer, 4/5/08
